Australian National Flag
Our national flag reflects our country’s ideals and principles, equality of citizens, a western constitutional democracy with protection under law of our rights, privileges and responsibilities.
The Australian National Flag was chosen by Australians in a competition following the Federation of Australia on 1st Jan 1901.
Since 1901, our Australian National Flag has served to represent many generations of Australians with honour and with distinction; through periods of peace and war, in great sporting contests, through national emergencies of fire, flood and drought, at all times.
Our national flag represents all Australians equally without discrimination for age, race, ability, sex, religion or language.
By law, custom and tradition our Flag is Australia’s chief national symbol to both native born and new Australian Citizens.
Australian National Flag Day
Australian National Flag Day, on the 3rd of September, marks the anniversary of the birth of the flag in 1901, the year our nation was created by choice of the people. On this day, the flag was officially designated the National Flag of Australia, having been democratically chosen by Australians in a unique public competition.
Merchant Navy Day
Flag Day also marks the birth of the Red Ensign, when it was designated the flag of the Merchant Navy at the same time.
