About Us

Flag Day Australia is an incorporated association in NSW.

Our mission is to commemorate and promote the role and significance of the Australian National Flag, our chief national symbol by law, custom and tradition. We do this by:

Celebrating and promoting the Australian National Flag and Red Ensign, by conducting the Flag Day Ceremony in Sydney on Australian National Flag Day, September 3rd

Commemorating the service and sacrifice of all who have served under the flag, in war and in humanitarian and peace-keeping missions

Gathering and publishing inspirational messages from dignitaries regarding the flag and its celebration on Flag Day

Raising awareness of the meaning and significance of the Australian National Flag and Flag Day

Facilitating the teaching of the proper use of our flag at home and overseas and thereby the adoption of Australian values

John Vaughan OAM initiated the commemoration of Australian National Flag Day in Sydney in 1984. In 1996, the day was officially established by proclamation of the Governor General, Sir William Deane.

Flag Day Australia was formed in 2019, with the former Lord Mayor of Sydney, Doug Sutherland, as our founding patron.

We formed to keep the celebration of Flag Day going in Sydney. Unfortunately, restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic have prevented us from holding the Flag Day ceremony in Martin Place in 2020 and 2021. Instead we have celebrated the day by all means we can on-line.

Our plan now is to resume the Flag Day ceremony in Martin Place from 2022.
